Montessori-Inspired Holiday Crafts
Make Beaded Snowflake Ornaments
Using beads and pipe cleaners, preschoolers can make beautiful snowflakes. Provide your child with a variety of colored beads, and instruct them to thread the beads onto the pipe cleaners. This will help develop their eye-hand coordination and concentration while giving them a sense of accomplishment as they make their own snowflake designs.
Create a Festive Holiday Card for Someone You Love
With simple instructions, your child can make a Christmas card for their grandparents or another significant person in their life. First, have them trace a circle on their card. Next, put glue on the circle and give your child pom poms to place on the glue. This will create a beautiful wreath on the front of the card. Finally, provide festive stickers for your child to add around the wreath. They will not only enjoy this activity, but they will learn to give in the process. It’s meaningful to create something with the purpose of giving it away.
Menorah Collage
Help your child make a menorah collage using colored paper, glue, and glitter. They can cut out the shapes of the menorah, candles, and flames, and then glue them onto a paper. This activity will promote fine motor skills and creativity.
Create Icicles for Your Tree
You’ll need metallic pipe cleaners (silver works best for a glittery, icy look), beads, and a thread or piece of yarn for hanging the icicles. The sensory experience of working with beads is super fun for children. Pour all of the beads into a large container so your child can get their hands in there and sift through them. Supply different colors and shapes, shiny and muted, giving your child lots of opportunities for learning.
Your son or daughter will explore colors and patterns as they make icicles for your tree. It requires concentration to thread a pipe cleaner. The holes in some beads can be tiny, but they will still work.
Twist the pipe cleaner around the bottom bead to stop beads from sliding off the end. Do the same to the top bead once it is on. Space the beads out so some silver shows between them. And give the icicle a spiral effect by having your child wind the pipe cleaner around a pencil and then slide it off. Finish by slipping a length of thread through the top bead and knot it to ensure it is secure. These icicles will shimmer in the light, and they are a meaningful craft you can do together.
Kinara Paper Craft
Help your child create a paper Kinara by cutting out shapes from construction paper and assembling them to form the traditional Kwanzaa candle holder.
Make a Stick Christmas Tree
Gather several sticks from your yard or neighborhood. Break them into incrementally longer pieces to create a fir tree design. Hot glue the sticks onto a large popsicle stick. A ribbon can be added while gluing so the fir tree can be hung on your Christmas tree as an ornament. Provide paint so your child can paint the tree. Once the tree dries, allow your child to paint ornaments on it of a contrasting color. This will foster eye-hand coordination, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment.
Rangoli Art
Using colored rice, sand, or flour, your child can create beautiful patterns on the floor or on paper as a way to celebrate the Diwali festival of lights. This activity will promote sensory exploration and fine motor skills.
Decorate a Tiny Tree Together
Purchase a small Christmas tree and compile the decorations your child made on a tray. Instruct your preschooler to hang them on the tree. This helps develop their fine motor muscles in their hands, takes concentration, improves eye-hand coordination, and is fun to do—all at the same time! Put on some music, and let the festivities begin!
Thread Bells
Take a pipe cleaner and instruct your child to thread a bell or two on it to make a festive bracelet instrument. This is awesome fine motor work.
